10€ FRANCE 2021 - Arrival of Washington in Boston

• Celebrating US Independence History Starting in 2020, Monnaie de Paris will retrace the history of American Independence through a collection of coins.The designs of the coins are directly inspired by historical products published by Monnaie de Paris: old medals from our archives.This sub-theme is part of the Great Dates of Humanity theme which began in 2019 with the fall of the Berlin Wall, the First Step on the Moon and the Dday. In 2020, Monnaie de Paris began the series “History of US Independency" with the arrival of La Fayette in Boston. This year, we have decided to represent the arrival of On the obverse, an undraped bust of George Washington facing right. Below the bust is the artist's name, "Duvivier Paris F". The engraving is taken from an old medal struck by Monnaie de Paris, which gives the coin authenticity. At the bottom of the coin is inscribed "COMITIA AMERICANA", which in Latin means "The American Congress". All around the coin, the inscription "GEORGIO WASHINGTON SVMPREMO DVCI EXERCITVVM ADSERTORI LIBERTATIS" is present, which can be translated as "The American Congress to George Washington, General-in-Chief of the armies, the defender of freedom". On the reverse side, we can see Washington, on Dorchester Heights, leading its four officers on horseback towards the city of Boston. To the right of the coin are a fort, cannons and cannonballs lying on the ground. Washington points to the British ships fleeing the city. For more than 40 years, the UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) lists the sites that are part of the “world heritage cultural property sites”. Since 2007, Monnaie de Paris honours various monuments included in this list in a series of collector coins. From 2019, this thematic is expanding one more time all over the world.In 2021, on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of his death, Monnaie de Paris pays tribute to one of the first explorers to have undertaken and succeeded in a world tour, Fernand de Magellan (1480-1521).On the obverse of this coin is engraved the portrait of Fernando de Magellan, Portuguese navigator and explorer.The Victoria sailing the seas and oceans is shown on the coin. It was the first ship to navigate the globe on its expedition to the Molucca Islands. This is expressed by the world map in the background, which also shows the route taken by Magellan and his crew. In 2021, we will celebrate the bicentenary of the passing away of Napoleon I. This year will therefore be truly "Napoleon Year" celebrated in France and internationally. We obviously couldn't miss this event and wanted to celebrate it not only from several angles of the heritage of this period of French history but also through our different types of products.This coin is in the shape of a bicorn, the famous headdress, emblem of Napoleon.On this side, we wanted to represent the different aspects of the Napoleonic period.The grenadiers of the guard, on the left, represent the battles of the military epic of the famous Great Army, while the allegory of justice, on the right, taken from the preface of the civil code, symbolises the civil reforms of this period.
