A new series of commemorative coins are being released by the U.S. Mint to mark the 100th anniversary of the three iconic coins in the U.S. Coinage; the Mercury Dime, the Standing Liberty Quarter, and Walking Liberty Half Dollar.

The Walking Liberty Half Dollar is the third and final release in this series. This coin will have the same design as that of its original silver counterpart. The design was extremely popular upon its release in 1916. The designer of the coin is Adolph A. Weinman who won the opportunity to design two coins, the Mercury Dime and Walking Liberty Half Dollar, from a competition held by the Commission of Fine Arts.

The Walking Liberty was an instant hit with the public, and it raised a deep patriotic feeling in a nation that was getting ready for a war. The design had a lot of meaning and was an inspiration to many. The obverse features a full-length image of a beautiful Lady Liberty draped in stars and stripes and striding forward confidently towards a new dawn while her gown and the flag gently billowing in the air. Her right hand is outstretched in a sense of leading, and her left hand is holding a bundle of olive and oak branches which signify peace and strength. She is wearing the Phrygian cap on her head.

The reverse features the image of a majestic bald eagle perched on the cliff of a mountain, its wings unfolded showing fearless spirit and completely conscious of its power. A sapling of mountain pine is springing from the rift of the mountain, which symbolizes America.
