The Chornobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve – located in the area affected by the Chornobyl nuclear power plant disaster – is a unique nature reserve in Ukraine. Despite suffering a catastrophe on a planetary scale, nature has been recovering here at a surprisingly fast pace. These vast areas have become a kind of reserve for the recovery of fauna typical for the Polesia region, including animals on the list of endangered species. The area is seeing the return of large animals to their natural habitats from which they were previously completely eliminated by humans. One of these species is the brown bear, which reappeared in the decades following the accident, a hundred years after it was last seen there. Photo traps have from time to time recorded the presence of brown bears in the reserve.
