The women honored are from ethnically, racially, and geographically diverse backgrounds.Bessie Coleman was a pilot, advocate, and pioneer who flew to great heights as the first African American and first Native American woman pilot and first African American to earn an international pilot’s license.The reverse design depicts Bessie Coleman as she suits up in preparation for flight, her expression reflective of her determination to take to the skies, the only place she experienced a freedom she did not have on the ground. The inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “QUARTER DOLLAR,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “BESSIE COLEMAN,” and “6.15.1921,” the date Coleman received her pilot’s license.The common obverse (heads) depicts a portrait of George Washington. This design was originally composed and sculpted by Laura Gardin Fraser as a candidate entry for the 1932 quarter, which honored the bicentennial of George Washington’s birth. The women honored are from ethnically, racially, and geographically diverse backgrounds.Dr. Sally Ride is featured on the second coin released in this program.The first American woman to soar into space, Ride captured the Nation’s imagination as a symbol of the ability of women to shatter barriers. Her historic flight represented just one aspect of a remarkable and multi-faceted life.She was also an athlete, physicist, science writer, and inspirational leader in science education. When she blasted off aboard space shuttle Challenger on June 18, 1983, Ride became the first American woman in space.The reverse (tails) design depicts Ride next to a window on the space shuttle, inspired by her quote, “But when I wasn’t working, I was usually at a window looking down at Earth.” It was designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Designer Elana Hagler and sculpted by United States Mint Medallic Artist Phebe Hemphill. The inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM” is intentionally positioned over the Earth next to the U.S., indicating that Ride was the first American woman in space. Additional inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “QUARTER DOLLAR,” and “DR. SALLY RIDE.”This American Women Quarters Three-Roll Set – Dr. Sally Ride contains single rolls of 40 uncirculated coins each, for a total of 120 coins in each set. The women honored are from ethnically, racially, and geographically diverse backgrounds.Wilma Mankiller is featured on the third coin released in this program.Wilma Mankiller was the first woman elected chief of the Cherokee Nation. Mankiller’s administration revitalized the Cherokee Nation through extensive community development, including improvements to health care and education. Mankiller’s leadership on social and financial issues made her tribe a national role model.After leaving office, she remained a strong voice worldwide for social justice, native people, and women. In her 1993 autobiography, she said she wanted to be remembered for emphasizing that Cherokee values can help solve contemporary problems. Mankiller received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998.The reverse (tails) design depicts Wilma Mankiller with a resolute gaze to the future. The wind is at her back, and she is wrapped in a traditional shawl. To her left is the seven-pointed star of the Cherokee Nation. It was designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Designer Benjamin Sowards and sculpted by United States Mint Medallic Artist Phebe Hemphill. The inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “QUARTER DOLLAR,” “WILMA MANKILLER,” “PRINCIPAL CHIEF” and the name of the Cherokee Nation written in the Cherokee syllabary.The common obverse (heads) depicts a portrait of George Washington. Weir Farm National Historic Site in Connecticut includes a 60-acre cultural landscape consisting of 15 historic structures, including houses, barns, studios, and outbuildings. The artistic tradition at Weir Farm is kept alive through a variety of “Art in the Park” programs, including an artist-in-residence program, free art supplies, night painting, and art lessons.This reverse (tails) design depicts an artist wearing a painter’s smock painting outside Julian Alden Weir’s studio at Weir Farm.
